Astrid Brandt
In 2015 the gallery presented works by Astrid Brandt (1963-2019) for the first time, under the title »homesome«. In this solo show, featuring selected pencil drawings from more than 25 years, the viewer could discover a body of exceptional art works. Because ever since she finished her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Braunschweig the artist has rarely completed more than three or four of these drawings per year, which are characterized by the greatest precision and atmospheric concentration.
Her theme comprised interiors from private life, as well as everyday objects, most especially stationary and office supplies. She translated these and other motifs into small-format drawings after a lengthy process of discovery. This involved not only selecting the objects she put on paper in minute, precise details, but also the presentation, which always plays an important role in her compositions – and lends an occasionally disconcerting life of their own to these seemingly familiar items. Consequently, her art works are not realistic in the usual sense, but dominated by a suggestive kind of hyper-acuity, leading the art expert Andreas Bee to call them »hypno-experiments« in drawing.
In 2020 the gallery presented an exhibition in memory of the artist and her impressive oeuvre with twelve drawings from the estate.
